● octant nom masculin (latin octans, -antis) Huitième partie du cercle, arc de 45°. Ancien instrument d'astronomie nautique fondé sur le principe de la double réflexion, analogue au sextant, mais qui comportait un secteur gradué de 45°.

A. — 1. GÉOM., MÉTROL. Arc de quarante-cinq degrés, huitième de cercle. (Dict. XIXe et XXe s.).
2. ASTRON., vx. Distance, secteur de quarante-cinq degrés entre deux astres; en partic., position de la lune par rapport au soleil, calculée en arcs de quarante-cinq degrés. La lune est dans les octants(Ac.). ,,Elle est à 45 degrés du soleil (ou à 135 degrés, 225 degrés ou 315 degrés)`` (Ac.). Nous sommes au deuxième octant de la lune; c'est le maximum d'humidité (HUGO, Travaill. mer, 1866, p.185).
B. —MAR., vieilli. Instrument analogue au sextant, servant principalement à la navigation, qui comporte un arc de quarante-cinq degrés, soit égal au huitième du cercle. Octant à réflexion. L'octant sert, en mer, à prendre la hauteur du soleil (Ac.). Nous avons constamment navigué avec moins d'erreur en longitude, qu'on n'en avait en latitude il y a dix ans, lorsqu'on observait avec des octans de bois (Voy. La Pérouse, t.4, 1797, p.238).
